Shahab Hamidi-Rad
Software Architect at InterDigital Inc.

About Me

I am a Software Architect at the InterDigital AI research lab in Los Altos, California. I studied Electronics Engineering in Tehran, Iran in the early 1990s and worked for a supervisory control and automation company for about 6 years before moving to the Bay Area in late 2000.

In 2001 I started working for Animatics—a motion control and robotics company—for about 5 years before joining Harmonic Inc. in 2006. At Harmonic, I designed and developed several video encoding products including a statistical multiplexing system for video transport streams. In 2015 I joined Technicolor AI research lab in Los Altos where I worked on several machine learning projects. Our research lab was acquired by InterDigital Inc. in 2019 and since then, I have been working on several Deep Learning projects with applications in a variety of fields ranging from Wireless Communication to Quantum Computing.

Having no formal education besides my bachelor's degree in EE, I am a strong believer in autodidacticism. Everything I have learned about AI, Machine Learning, Deep learning, and—as of late—Quantum Computing is through studying scientific papers and books, in addition to a great deal of experimental coding. I have a strong math background and can discipline myself to learn any field of interest as fast as possible.

I have been blessed with a wonderful wife of 31 years and a lovely daughter, who currently studies Computational Social Science at the University of California San Diego.

My hobbies include making gadgets (such as IoT devices) for around the house, woodworking, gardening, walking, listening to podcasts, enjoying music, and watching movies.

Feel free to reach out via Linkedin or send me a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

My Research

I am mostly passionate about practical AI, machine learning, and Quantum Computing. During my time with InterDigital and Technicolor AI labs I have designed and implemented ML solutions and prototypes for several applications such as smart IoT devices and face detection/recognition for home security. I have also utilized transformer neural networks in wireless communication applications, and implemented a variety of algorithms for deep neural network compression.
